Local Charities to Support this Christmas


It’s hard for everyone to get into the Christmas spirit this year due to a variety of situations, mainly the global pandemic, aka Covid-19. This year to get yourself into the Christmas spirit and help our community think about making some donations to our local charities and non-profit organizations. Donating can be an amazing way of getting into the Christmas spirit, it is the season of giving after all. It will benefit our community and give you a nice warm feeling inside!



1. Aidaen’s place; wellness center


Aidaen’s Place is a youth wellness center that was opened by Kelly and Scott Mitchelle, the parents of 14-year-old Aidaen Mae who took her life in early 2019 due to mental illness. Their mission is to offer support for youth ages 11-17. They wish to provide a safe place for youth and help youth better their mental health and wellness. Support for the parents of the youth is also offered to assist parents in caring for their children’s mental health.


Right now Aidaen’s place is looking for:

  • Non-refrigerated jugs of juice

  • Milk

  • Gluten-free and nut-free snacks

  • Cereal

  • Non-perishable and healthy snacks

  • Pasta sauces

  • Pizza kits

  • Any meat (ex. Hamburger, chicken, etc.)

  • Laundry detergent

  • Paper towel


Cash donations are always welcomed too as they will put it where it is needed to most! The center is opened Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 3:00 pm-8:00 pm and Saturday 1:00 pm-5:00 pm. It is located at 487 Main St. Yarmouth NS.

2. SPCA


The SPCA is a no-kill shelter and registered charity. Every year they help more than 16 000 animals across the province and are always looking for donations to help provide for the animals. They believe that all pets, no matter the situation, deserve a second chance at life and deserve to be loved. The animals are worked with one on one in their needed areas and are given the needed care by a vet. They are cared for until they find their forever family. The SPCA does not receive any government funding, 100% of the money that is raised for them is put to use to help the community it was raised in.


Right now the SPCA is looking for:

  • Non-clumping kitty litter

  • Plain white printer paper

  • Wet cat food- pȃté style

  • Paper towels and toilet paper

  • Bleach

  • Latex gloves

  • Black garbage bags

  • Clear bags (food storage small, medium, and large)

  • Small dog treats (training purposes)

  • Dog toys and cat toys (no catnip)

  • “Yesterday News” cat litter

  • Dog training “clickers”

  • Dog harnesses and leashes

  • Tupperware containers (cereal size)

  • Small cat litter boxes

  • Stainless steel food bowls

  • Dishwasher detergent

  • HE laundry detergent

  • Size 10 window or non-window envelopes

  • Pens

  • Whiteout

  • Sticky notes

  • Document laminator

  • Banker boxes

  • File folders

  • Non-electric heating pads

  • Paper cups

  • Ziplock bags

  • Windshield washer fluid

  • Pediatric scale

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Hand soap/sanitizer

  • Wet cat and dog food

  • Chicken with broth baby food

  • Peanut butter


Cash donations are also welcomed. Their hours are 11:00 am-4:00 pm Tuesday-Sunday and they are located on 298 Hardscratch Road, Yarmouth. Donations can be dropped off during hours or you can contact them.

3. SHYFT


SHYFT (Supportive Housing Youth Focus Team) is a housing support service for at-risk and homeless youth. It provides services such as housing and counseling, along with other things. It’s opened to youth aged 16-24. They are open 24/7.


Right now SHYFT is looking for:

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Hygiene supplies

  • Christmas goodies

  • Large body towels

  • Pot set

  • Underwear (new)

  • Deodorant

  • Hairbrushes

  • Nail clippers (new)

  • Mini fridge

4. Tri-County Women's Centre


The Tri-County Women’s Centre is an organization that offers services for women and girls living in the Tri-Counties. They offer a number of services and recourses to women and girls. The Tri-County Women’s Centre offers support, advocacy, and programs. Some of the support they offer is an accompaniment to a variety of appointments, assistance with resumes, applications, and filling out government forms, free pregnancy testing, specialized trauma counseling services for victims of sexualized violence, and many other things. They work to be as accessible as possible.


Right now the Tri-County Women’s Centre is looking for:

  • Non-perishable food items

  • Puzzle books

  • Colouring books (adult and kids)

  • Coloring pencils

  • Gift cards

  • Hygiene products

  • Christmas stockings

  • Toys for all ages
